In Memory of Norm Schureman

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I heard the news of the tragic death of my good friend and colleague Norm Schureman Saturday night. Norm was one of the finest teachers I have ever known. He was beloved by his students, colleagues and friends. I worked along side Norm for about 20 years at Art Center and I can honestly say I am a better teacher because of him. Norm, I will miss you more than you could ever know.

My heart goes out to his entire family at this time of unexpected loss.

"A 50-year-old instructor at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena was shot and killed after a dispute at a weekend party in an upscale Westlake Village neighborhood, sending shock waves through the school’s community.

Norman Schureman died at the UCLA Medical Center in Westwood after being shot in the upper torso Saturday night, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide detectives. Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the 31700 block of Kentfield Court at 11:13 p.m.

A suspect, Steven Honma, 55, of Westlake Village was taken into custody, according to a sheriff’s official. Telephone listings show Honma lives on the same street where the shooting took place.

Witnesses told authorities there was an argument at the party. They said the suspect left, returned with a handgun and shot Schureman. Sheriff’s investigators are not releasing what the argument was about until all witnesses have been interviewed.

Schureman had taught at the Art Center for more than 20 years and his father, Bob Schureman, taught there before him. The Schureman’s legacy at the school went back almost 40 years, according to a statement released Sunday by the school’s president, Lorne Buchman."
